King Fong OAM

King Fong (方勁武) is a highly respected member of Chinese community in Sydney. His nickname is ‘King of Chinatown’. Born in Suva of Fiji in 1938, King migrated to Sydney with his family in 1946 on a 'merchant status' visa. His father founded the family grocery store/lodging house 'Say Tin Fong & Co.' on 56-58 Dixon Street, Haymarket in 1949 and King succeeded the company after his father passed away and went on to be the general manager until his retirement in 1986. King has been involved in charity works with the Sydney Chinese community since 1960 and he is keen to preserve the history of Sydney's Chinatown. He played a crucial role in the re-development of Dixon Street Chinatown in the late 1970s and he still acts as the guide for Sydney Chinatown walking tour.
