181-187 Hay St, Haymarket

Join us this Saturday, 10 August from 2–5 pm for an engaging afternoon featuring an In-Conversation with artist Johanna Ng and a Book Fair hosted by 4A.

From 2–3 pm, our Curatorial Program Manager Con Gerakaris will have a discussion with artist Johanna Ng about her first solo exhibition, every asian in sex and the city. This exhibition critiques biases in contemporary Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and their parallels with representation issues in popular media. Drawing inspiration from the TV series 'Sex and the City,' Johanna Ng explores the persistent erasure of Asian identities in AI neural networks and network television.

The discussion will explore how AI's flawed subjectivity leads to a lack of diversity, with Johanna using Google's Computer Vision and Text-to-Image applications to reveal these biases. Her work provides a compelling commentary on the intersection of technology and cultural identity.

Following the discussion, from 3–5 pm, 4A will host a Book Fair at the ground floor gallery, featuring a wide range of publications in need of new homes. Browse through artist books, exhibition catalogues, and journals from Australia, Asia and beyond—all priced at just $5. Bring a bag, enjoy tea and snacks!

We look forward to welcoming you to a day of art, culture and community engagement.
