Nathan Nhan (b. 1997 Canberra, ACT) is a ceramicist and recent graduate of the Australian National University School of Art (2019). His practice focuses on experiential making and how experimenting with ceramic processes can be used as a tool to create, explore and manifest identities. Nhan is an Asian Australian that grew up figuring out what place and community is and the complex theme of identity. He responds to the materiality and cultural significance of ceramics, which Nhan feels nurtures his intentions of identity finding. Nhan is often using the vessel as the foundation of his ceramic work and as a vehicle to communicate the eternal within the enduring material of ceramics. In a cultural context of ceramics’ material history, Nhan plays with its epic narrative of both Eastern and Western perspectives to communicate personal stories in his work.
