Ian Were has written regularly for Australian art and culture journals — beginning, in the late 1970s, with street magazines Preview and Adelaide Review. From 1996 to 2002 he was editor of Object magazine (26 issues), and from 2002 to 2009 he was Senior Editor at the Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art where he edited or co-edited around 12 exhibition publications and edited 23 issues of the Gallery’s Artlines magazine.

From 2008 to 2013 he was a member of the Board of Directors of Artisan and, previously, was a board member of the Institute of Modern Art and Fusions: Australian Network of Clay + Glass Artists (both in Brisbane), and a board member of Artspace in Sydney.
